RETURN OF THE MAC
MAC MILLER . Sept 24 2011
JMG HALL . Northampton, MA
Review by Evie Ortiz, Lauren Bridges, & Lindsey Kaghan
On the night of September 24th, my friends and I had the oppurtunity (thanks
to WOZQ) to see Mac Miller perform in JMG Hall at Smith College. We were all
very excited at the idea, some of us had seen him perform in Northampton the
year before but we were all eager to see what he would do next. As we approached
the scene, all we could see was a mob-like line of highschool students, rocking
snapback caps, like Mac, and the pungent stank of dank sat heavy in the air.
JMG was packed when we got into the building, and the shrill screams of
hopeful future Mrs. Mac Millers mixed with the roar of stoner kids drowned out the
opening DJ on stage. The mood was set as the rowdy young fans made it clear that
only thing missing from the experience was Mr. Mac Miller himself. When he finally
arrived on stage, he was greeted by the ecstatic energy of his dedicated followers,
rapping all the lines to his songs. Feeding off of the crowd, Mac Miller maintained
an impressive level of enthusiasm throughout his entire set as he ran back and
forth across the stage encouraging the audience’s participation. Mac played some
of the classics from his mixtape K.I.D.S, such as The Spins and Nikes On My Feet, but
he also showed some respect for the oldskool greats when he covered Outkast’s
Spottieottiedopaliscious (one of my favorite “smangers”). Mac Miller utilized old
school energy like that of the Sugar Hill Gang fused with contemporary pop and hip
hop lyrics. Forever young tonight, we can only wonder how Millers flow will grow.
